COMMUNITY BENEFITS FROM MAFIKENG HOTEL SCHOOL – PEERMONT RELATIONSHIP
Mafikeng: Mafikeng Hotel School has developed a very fruitful relationship which benefits its needy students, with the Peermont Hotel Group through the Klerksdorp Rio Casino and Resort. The Peermont Group has pledged over R1 million in direct financial support to needy, high academic achievers of the Mafikeng Hotel School, since the inception of this bursary scheme some 4 years ago. The Klerksdorp Rio Casino Resorts has supported over 50 students to date, with 10 bursaries annually to the value of R20 000.00 each.
At the recent annual parents and guardians meeting at the Hotel School, The Regional Manager of the Peermont Group, Mr. Clive Tarvener reiterated the commitment of Peermont to continue supporting the good work that is being done by Mafikeng Hotel School in developing the required skills for the tourism economy of the country, adding that the only condition attached to the award was that the beneficiaries should demonstrate good leadership qualities and outstanding academic performance to justify the privilege they enjoy as bursary holders. The Mmabatho Palms Casino and Resorts, also part of the Peermont Group on the other hand, had begun its financial support to the Hotels School in 2008, thus far R160 000.00, donating R40 000.00 in assistance of 2 needy students per annum at the recent meeting.
Speaking at the same function, the newly appointed General Manager of Mmabatho Palms Casino and Resorts Ms. Tracy Mkhize pointed out her commitment to continuing with the formidable relationship that had been developed between the Mafikeng Hotel School and Mmabatho Palms by her predecessor Mr. Leon Nel. She urged the students to work hard and assured the parents and guardians of a great future and attractive opportunities awaiting their children when they completed their studies.
Readers who have been following this initiative will recall that in 2009, Klerksdorp Rio Casino Resorts provided R400 000.00. Last month a cheque of R200 000.00 was handed over the Hotel School to cover 10 students for the 2012 academic year
The Rector of the Hotel Schools, Mr. Joseph Akwa thanked the both Mr. Tarvener and Ms. Mkhize for their unwavering support and commitment to the course of the institution, and added, “The continued support which the students of Mafikeng Hotel School receive from the Peermont Hotel Group has made it possible for many lives in our communities to be changed for the better. I urge other private sector organizations and government entities to emulate the good work as demonstrated by our partners in the hospitality industry, the Peermont Hotel Group.”
